Cerea - Adventures in an online world
Tuesday, 25 July 2006

cereabookfrontsmallframe This book is a compilation of stories from the online world Cerea Island.

The stories were written by individual players involved in the adventures. Thus what you find inside are many people telling of their adventures in the world.

The online world Cerea is based on an island of the same name in a pen and paper role playing world that was created in 1988 and then made as a server for the game Neverwinter Nights (NWN) starting early 2003. (Neverwinter Nights was made by Bioware and published by Atari in 2002.)

What made the game such a great thing was the included toolset and a Dungeon Master (DM) client, allowing you to create your own worlds and share them with others online. This gave rise to a phenomenon called Persistent Worlds (PW), where the world was always online and the actions of the players influenced the world events. The Dungeon Master client allowed a Dungeon Master to control events in real time allowing the world to react to player actions in a detail that is impossible for a computer.

Cerea Island was most active from early 2003 to the middle of 2005. During that time the events and different adventures numbered in the thousands.

Some of those adventures were also written down and also posted online to be enjoyed by the other players.

Organization

cereabookrearsmallframeThis book is divided into six parts.

Part one - The World - is a description of Cerea, detailing the world, the races, the gods, the timelines the geography and more. This will allow you to learn about the background of the world and the backdrop of the events.

Part two - Suttus Tales - is a retelling of a major quest series of more than hundred adventures all linked together by a common story.

Part three - Adventurer Guild Journals - is a lot of shorter stories on adventures. The tales span from the serious to mostly silly. This is by far the largest part of the book.

Part four - Cerea Times - contains six issues of the in-game newspaper detailing a number of the Suttus Tales and other events at the same time.

Part five - Reports to the Temple of Ra - are taken from the many quests linked to the church of Ra, the major visible force fighting evil, or major followers of Ra.

Part six - Stories of End of an Era - detail the events surrounding the end of the current civilization at end of the third era.

Appendices contain details of more obscure information, a vocabulary and the maps.

Future

The adventures in the same world are continued on the Cerea Island 2 server for Neverwinter Nights 2, from early 2007 onwards.

The idea for this book came while discussing what would happen with the old events and their memory.

A book with a selection of the many stories seemed like a good way to remember the old events while we go forward.

Dedication

This book is dedicated to the hundreds of people who participated and especially to the dozens of regular players and Dungeon Masters who were very active for a long time, making the world a lively place with a feeling of life and adventure.

Thus this book is intended as a celebration of the past joys in adventures and the coming ones in Cerea Island 2.
